REMINDERS:
In accordance with state statute and Policy JG-R1, students are not permitted to use, display or turn on phones, personal laptops or any other electronic personal communications devices during the regular school day, including class change time, mealtimes or instructional class time. Please note, after school detentions are extensions of the school day, meaning students will not be allowed to use their phone while serving an after-school detention. The school district will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.
State statute defines an electronic personal communications device as a portable device that is used to initiate, receive, store, or view communication, information, images, or data electronically. This includes but is not limited to earphones, watches, cell phones, personal laptops, etc.
Students needing to make/receive phone calls during the school day should use the office phone. Parents/guardians can leave a message with the school office if you need to communicate with them throughout the day.
Students may use their phones and personal devices up to the 7:55 bell. Phones are prohibited in locker rooms and restrooms. Students are NOT to wear wireless headphones, airpods, etc during the school day.
Where should students store their electronic devices (cell phones, smart watches, personal laptops, etc)?
- Electronic devices must be stored in lockers or in bookbags. Be sure they are TURNED OFF!
When are electronic devices allowed?
- Electronic devices can be used until 7:55am and after 3:35pm (except in detentions).
What about after school and extra curriculuar activities?
- Electronic devices can be used after school (except in detentions/tutoring) according to coach/sponsor.
Are their any exceptions?
- The law allows for very few exceptions. The law only allows exceptions for students who need devices for specific educational or health needs, such as individualized education plans or 504 plans under federal laws. The law also allows for device use in emergencies (fire, earthquake, etc.) or for authorized educational purposes.
Tell me more about the new law (SB 68).
- The full bill can be found at https://www.senate.mo.gov/25info/pdf-bill/tat/SB68.pdf . Specific information about cell phone and electronic communication devices can be found in the bill on page 62-64.
Can students keep my electronic devices in lockers?
- Yes, please turn them off and place a lock on your locker. Locks are available in the office. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen electronic devices.
What are the consequences if my electronic devices are displayed or used?
- If in violation, the following will occur:
- 1st Offense: cell phone will be turned in to the Principal, student can pick up at end of day.
- 2nd Offense: cell phone is turned into the Principal, parents will be called to come and pick up the cell phone after school and the student will receive discipline listed below as determined by the building Principal. (Level 2 infraction, may have a greater consequence depending on student discipline record/usage of the phone during the violation).
- 3rd Offense: Above discipline, loss of privileges, and students must turn in the phone to the office each day for the remainder of the semester.
- Detention
- Monday school
- ISS or Turn in phone to office for a determined amount of days
Can I listen to music?
- Students can listen to music via chromebook with teacher approval, be sure to bring wired headphones. Students can download music on a jump drive. Students may not access YouTube or streaming media online.
How do parents contact students during school hours?
- Parents can contact the office to leave messages or to speak with students. Urgent messages will be given to students ASAP, otherwise, students will get messages between class periods.
